IN HOUT BAY
Many great restaurants are found downtown, with several of them affording stunning views of the bay, harbour and unforgettable sunsets. Read on to find some of our favourites.
CHAPMAN’S PEAK HOTEL
To walk into this restaurant – in an historic old building sitting right at the base of the famed Chapman’s Peak Drive – is to be transported back in time. Enjoy wonderful views of the bay. Stick to the seafood or maybe the beef fillet. We find this place great for afternoon/sundown cocktails and maybe a plate of their delicious calamari. Also a great lunch option.

Delicious, gorgeous and inventively presented plates of pan-Asian/Pacific Rim tapas-style portions. Tapas are small, so order several selections. Standouts include the deep-fried milk/green chilli caramel, chilli tamarind seared salmon and the Tokyo beef slider. For dessert, the peanut butter/miso/butterscotch shake is a must. There is a nice list of local wines. The place is smallish and very popular with locals as well as tourists, so definitely make a booking in advance. Request an outdoor table in good weather.

Not gourmet, just good food in an amazing setting. The sunsets over Hout Bay are stunning! Service varies. Standouts are the raw oysters, real Caesar salad and fried seafood, including great calamari. Skip the pizza. Wear flipflops! Reservations are a good idea, especially if an outdoor table is desired.

Massimo’s is everything you want in a small beach-town dinner spot. Casual, inviting and delicious. Extremely child friendly, and there is a large playground outside. Delicious brick-oven thin-crust pizza, and homemade pasta (including gluten-free options). Try the polenta nibbles as a starter. Daily specials. We love it and visit often! Great vibe, friendly service and delicious food.

It’s a good thing Mila Noodle does not deliver or we might eat only from there. The husband/wife team (and their precious baby, Mila) are Chinese but he makes some of the best sushi we’ve ever tasted. The back of the menu also offers some Chinese standards, which are the best Chinese offerings available in Hout Bay as well. This is not about atmosphere or decor in any way as both are quirky. It’s about consistently being surprised by the flavour and combination of ingredients. Tell the waiter, Lovejoy, that you are a guest of Maison Noir and you’ll get the royal treatment.

QUENTIN AT OAKHURST
Quentin at Oakhurst is less than five minutes’ drive from Maison Noir. The space is exquisite and the walls are covered in Hout Bay and South African history – well worth a closer look. The service here is divine; almost Parisian. The roasted marrow bones with parsley and garlic served with ash goat’s cheese on toast is to die for! This place is intriguing and an anomaly of sophistication to find in such a small town.

Relatively authentic Greek offerings in an extremely chilled environment. Request an outdoor seat in the courtyard out front for great people-watching in the afternoons. The service usually leaves something to be desired, but it’s worth it when the food arrives.

This is a chain restaurant, but the food is delicious and the quality consistent. Delivery is usually within 15 minutes – if it will be longer, they let you know. Black bean noodles or curry, curry, curry – you can’t go wrong! In-restaurant service is casual but extremely friendly and efficient. Local jewel!
